Dr. Josephine B. Schmitt (Research Associate / Research Innovation Hub)

Dr. Josephine B. Schmitt is working as research associate in the Research Innovation Hub at CAIS. Among others, she is responsible for research on and development of innovative concepts of interdisciplinary research on digitization as well as the Dephi-Study dealing with the future of digitization research. Moreover, she supports the identification of relevant fields of research. She is point of contact for the CAIS-research projects starting in January 2020.  

Since January 2020 she is equal opportunity officer at CAIS. 

Curriculum Vitae
  • From September 2018 until August 2019 Josephine B. Schmitt was working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Media and Communication at the LMU, Munich.
  • From 2016 to 2018 she held a position in the international, interdisciplinary EU-funded project „CONTRA – Countering Propaganda through Narration towards anti-radical awareness“.
  • From 2012 until 2016 she worked as a research assistant at the Chair of Media Psychology, first at University of Hamburg, later at University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart. 2015 she finished her PhD.
  • In summer 2013 she spent two months as visiting scholar at the School of Communication at the Ohio State University, Columbus (Ohio).
  • Josephine B. Schmitt studied Psychology and New German Literature at University of Hamburg. Besides, she worked as a student assistant at SPIEGEL TV Infotainment and DER SPIEGEL.
  • In her research, she is interested – among others – in the content, distribution and effects of hate speech, extremist propaganda as well as online (political) information and educational content. Moreover, she develops didactical concepts in the context of radicalization prevention, gives talks and workshops with regard to topics such as „Fake News“, Algorithms.
  • Since 2017 she is spokesperson for the young scholars of the Media Psychology Division of the German Psychology Association (DGPs). Since 2019 she is a member of the network „Bewegtbildung – Netzwerk für politische Bildung und Webvideo“.
