Logistics is an essential area in which the digitization of work is progressing rapidly. It is driven by large software and logistics companies that restructure and network logistics chains, reorganizing and distributing work. Especially in logistics centres, where algorithmic systems equipped with sensor technologies for data collection are in use, the relationship between machine and work and the future of automation is negotiated. Far-reaching debates on black box societies or algorithmic governance are concerned with the opportunities and dangers of algorithmic control systems for politics, culture and society. In logistics chains, these challenges become much more apparent and acute. The aim of the research project is therefore to investigate exemplary algorithmic systems for the organization of work in logistics centres from the perspective of media studies and science and technology studies using two case studies. It explores their opportunities, risks and room for maneuver for actors such as trade unions and civil society.
