Mobile image knowledge. Practices and potential of smartphone film

Smartphones have become an integral part of our everyday life. As portable instruments for recording, transmitting and relaying content, they change not only communicative behaviour, but also medial perception. This is especially true for the smartphone film. Not only has the camera, which we always carry with us on our smartphones, become more mobile; what it records can also be processed and viewed, distributed and networked without any time delay or spatial separation. The operations and dynamics of mobile media activity is giving rise to a new image knowledge, one that is changing permanently how we perceive both ourselves and the world.

This research project focuses on the potential that this transformation has, and in particular on the role that smartphone applications play in the productive processing of a networked image knowledge and the aesthetic and political implications for the media that this entails.
