Whether in democratic societies like Germany or authoritarian states like China – digital capitalism seems to be gaining ground everywhere (Fuchs 2017; 2020). Does the political economy of social media further enhance social inequalities? And are media users affected by different degrees of asymmetric power constellations when different political systems shape digital and demographic change? My media and cultural studies project aims at providing some answers to these questions by focusing on the media use of elderly people as „digital immigrants“ (Prensky 2001) since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Using critical theory, this explorative discourse analysis of social media content investigates how journalists and internet users in China and Germany publicly represented specific problems of the elderly and in what way these were aggravated by barriers in smartphone use. In addition, a survey of technical and social solutions offered by various stakeholders in different cultural contexts is conducted.
