Negotiating trust –  a deeper look into comparative survey data

Since 2017, I represent Romania in the largest digital audience study, Digital News Report – DNR, coordinated by the Reuters Institute at the University of Oxford. One of the most striking results of the DNR is related to media trust. Trust in newsrooms fluctuates, from year to year, in the same media market and across the DNR multinational panel. A closer look on national samples indicates that trust in media decreases (dramatically) when economic, political, or social crises hit a country. Nevertheless, during the COVID – devastated 2020, trust in media increased at international level to drop again, in 2022. How can these fluctuations be accounted for? What is their effect on civic participation and on democracy? One possible answer may be hidden online, in the burgeoning discussions on social platforms. This answer may be related to group identity formation and to polarization, due to strategic use of public discourses.
